The Challenge

Whitehead & Associates were engaged by Coffs Harbour Christian Community School Ltd to undertake an audit and prepare an On-Site Wastewater Management Plan. This was due to an unsatisfactory inspection of the On-site Sewage Management System by Coffs Harbour City Council. Due to the poor quality of effluent being generated, being undersized for peak loads and its location within close proximity to the school complex; it was recommended to upgrade the ~30yrs old 5-6kL/day Biocycle two tank Aerated Wastewater Treatment System and relocate away from the school complex. SOLUTION It was recommended by Whitehead & Associates, that a new Commercial Sequential Batch Reactor Wastewater treat- ment system be installed to manage peak daily flows of 11,5kL/day. Due to uneven flows through a 24hour cycle expected at the school, with high flows during school hours of 8.30am-3.30pm, and lower flows outside of that, a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) was preferred over a pure gravity flow system. A SBR will hold up wastewater and feed through in batches to the treatment system, thereby ensuring even treatment throughout a 24hour cycle. The GRAF SBR system also has a holiday mode function that can be activated during the less active summer holidays, thereby reducing operating costs.
