Project Overview
Western Power, Forrestdale In developing a new depot for Western Power, a common problem that confronts all large-scale commercial developments was water planning. In order to maximize usable area on the site, it was essential to put in place measures to mitigate bitumen and warehouse roof space as it would inevitably render the site impervious. This would ensure workspaces would not become vulnerable to flash flooding and inundation that would disrupt operations. By using a technique called “distributed detention” and design characteristics described as “source control” by Professor John Argue et al the Western Power site has been able to mitigate the risk of flooding while maintaining the sites natural water cycle and returning rainwater to the local aquifer. Problem & Solution Overall Benefits: The main problem the engineers at ADG were facing was how to deal with the stormwater runoff from the 106,730m2 catchment area. To compound the problem the site had a high-water table giving the existing soil very limited capacity. The answer was GRAF’s Inspect Flex product; providing the required storage capacity in a one-layer setting to keep the excavation shallow and away from the groundwater. In addition, GRAF’s Inspect Flex conforms with the load requirements of AS5100 making it the perfect solution for installations in industrial areas. Technical support from Graf’s innovative internal engineering department aided project design and supported throughout the installation process which was ably completed by MGC Civil. The low profile, high strength Inspect Flex system allowed project designers to provide below ground infiltration with the structural integrity required. -Low profile infiltration tanks allowed high volume detention.
