Challenge

South al-Mutlaa is Kuwait's largest construction project to date: housing for up to 400,000 residents across 12 suburbs and 28,363 buildings on about 104 km² in the Jahra District. Inland location, compact nearly impermeable soils, and rising heavy rainfall events mean existing sewers cannot absorb sudden volumes, so the city needs large infiltration capacity under parks and public areas.

Solution

Since construction began in 2018, GRAF has supplied over a million EcoBloc Maxx crates for fifteen infiltration systems with capacities from 6,000 to 55,000 m³. Most systems sit beneath public parks; some require earth coverings as deep as 6 metres. GRAF supported local partners with documentation, permits, CIRIA standards, logistics and site training. The final infiltration system in the published programme was installed in November 2021.
